Americans are still reeling from the economic crisis that peaked in 2009. That meltdown, however, could pale in comparison to the disaster poised to strike Fortune 500 companies, according to a new book released this week by America’s Top Coach(R) Stephen Xavier (http://www.americastopcoach.com).

In Not on My Watch: A Leader’s Guide to Navigating the Impending Retirement Bubble Disaster, Building a Bench and Leaving a Legacy of Success (BookSurge Publishing, ISBN

1439261857 – available at Amazon.com), Xavier paints a stark picture of the knowledge vacuum that even now is being created as Baby Boomers retire from executive leadership positions.

Xavier, whose 20 years of experience coaching and mentoring Fortune 500 clients worldwide have made him a trusted advisor for top executives, says the root of the problem is business leaders’ failure to take charge and implement concrete succession plans. Those plans could help today’s experienced leaders prepare the next generation to steer their companies to greater profitability and growth. In the absence of succession planning, however, emerging Generation X and Millennial leaders are woefully unprepared to step into leadership positions being vacated by soon-to-retire Baby Boomers. That spells disaster for the hundreds of companies that will soon find themselves without competent executives at the helm.

”Succession planning should not be just a corporate buzzword,” explained Xavier, president and CEO of Cornerstone Executive Development Group, Inc.

(http://www.cedg.com). “It is a necessary and critical process that involves identifying, evaluating and preparing an organization’s future leaders, building bench strength, and weeding out seemingly promising younger executives who, on closer inspection, may not possess the leadership qualities necessary to guide a company through transition.”

Xavier blames traditional business education and out-of-synch HR training programs for failing to prepare emerging executives for leadership roles. “Generic corporate training programs and B-school curricula with little real-world relevance have turned out future leaders that lack the fundamental skills needed to keep a company afloat

– basics like understanding how large, complex organizations work, tackling conflict head-on, making decisions and managing timelines,” Xavier says.

How can companies begin preparing for the inevitable vacancies Baby Boomer executives will leave? As with other corporate processes, responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of the current leadership team. Executives must identify, mentor and coach emerging leaders. If bench strength doesn’t exist within a company, executives need to look outside to identify and attract the talent needed for when Boomers depart — a task that should prove extremely fruitful, given the record numbers of strong candidates who are currently without jobs.

”The clock is ticking,” Xavier concluded. “An improving economy means recovered investment values for Baby Boomers, and that’s all many of them have been waiting for before exiting. They’ll be out the door soon, and their wealth of knowledge and experience is leaving with them. The time for action is now.”

Risk vs. Rewards

Risk vs. Rewards

Successful business leaders tend to be very observant and are exceptionally good at decision-making. Part of what makes them good at making the right decision quickly is their education and past experiences. A business-savvy executive acts fast, but not without clear intentions and strategic thought.

Your past experiences, direct and indirect, is the raw material you use to make smart, strategic decisions. For this reason, it is very important to be fully vested in all that you do, hear and see. Those who pay attention and “live in the present” tend to be better decision makers.

If you missed important information in a previous conversation or meeting, don’t try to work around it. Go to the source and ask questions. The ensuing conversation will not only fill in the missing data, but it may lead to other insights that would otherwise be missed. Invite an opinionated friend over to strategize. Plenty of great ideas come from thought-provoking conversations. Once you decide to take your idea to the next level, the strategies below can help you turn your idea into a successful venture:

  • Self Confidence – having a confident demeanor will captivate your audience
  • Conviction – believing in your message will influence others to do the same
  • Education – knowing your subject matter as well as your competition’s products and services will give you an edge in business as well as the ability to answer pointed questions.
  • Follow through – it is not enough just to make a sale. Follow through on your commitments and promises. Delivery and service after money has changed hands is key to a happy, and long-term, client.

Even the best decison makers occasionally have to change course midstream. Don’t be afraid to re-evaluate when new information is available. If there is too much to risk for the reward, then make the decision not to proceed. If you find you are unable to provide what you promised, partner with someone who can help and immediately provide a time frame to your clients. Having an unhappy client can set back your business and recovery can be very slow.

Personal Safety Training

Posted by: Shellee Hale | Comments (0)

I recently took a course on personal safety with my daughter facilitated by Larry Kaminer at The Personal Safety Group their website is http://www.personalsafetygroup.com . I found this course to be one of the best safety trainings around and it was a great mom/daughter bonding time. The class was scheduled for 3 hours but the captivated group asked questions taking this into overtime.

We learned a lot of great techniques to improve our chances of avoiding being a victim of a crime. Larry Kaminer our instructor gave us some real life experiences for the teens and mothers in the class to practice what they learned.

Larry Kaminer is a brilliant instructor and has established several different programs reaching a variety of audiences. We took the Teen Safety Training but he also has classes in the following categories:

Home Safety

Travel Safety

Real Estate Safety

Corporate Safety

Women at School

Hotel Staff

With hardships hitting so many people increased criminal activity and safety risks are on the rise. I recommend this training to prepare and give skill sets to reduce you or your employees chances of being the victim of a crime durring these troubling times.

This is my first week back after a crazy vacation in Thailand and the avoidance of the death trap at the Taj in India. So with charitable spirit and gratefulness for life and family I will offer email support for free all week. Feel free to contact me via the contact page on here and I will get back to you quickly with some great totally free coaching and consulting support all week long.

Happy Holidays!

Appreciation for what we know and have especially during these difficult times will shift your perspective and open up solutions you failed to previously recognize. The challenges and obstacles we face during hardships need influence of gratefulness and complete appreciation there is good in almost everything. The tighter we hold on to things the more difficult it is to accept circumstances beyond our control, so start with letting go of what you think you know and being open to a new experience.

Many people and entire communities are silently hurting and ignoring options for help with their issues. Their ego’s are blocking options for help. No matter how dire your situation there is help and working with someone who can expose you to those options takes the first step of getting out of the way of yourself and asking.

We don’t have the liberty of driving in circles trying to find a location anymore. The liberty of wasting gas, time, effort as well as the emotional energy is too much with all the rest happening in our lives. It makes more sense to just stop and get it figured out and ask for help. Sometimes it is best to go back to start and begin all over again.

Communication is often difficult when we feel like we failed. Reaching out and asking for help is a challenge for many people not just you. Whatever your situation is, I’m sure I personally could tell you ones that are worse. And even though I can’t say I’ve heard it all I will tell you that the stories I have heard are heartbreaking and personal. So know that you’re not alone and you’ll be amazed what a bit of courage and heart will do to turn things around.

You can start appreciating your own need for help and shift your perspective towards new and better solutions to your problems. I am one of thousands of people out there who have resources to help. If your lost on a road or in life don’t hesitate to reach out for help. I promise if you have an issue there is a solution no matter how grave your situation.

You’ve also got to focus your energy on achieving your goals and if your blocked don’t give up hope. Pushing through obstacles and appreciating what you have while handling what is challenging will bring new excitement and celebration back to your life. Well-planned actions now can result in both personal and financial growth in the future if the small picture is too grim let’s build a big picture that is beautiful and attainable.

If things are really bad start with a penny and appreciate having a penny and move from there. From now through the end of this year we will provide solutions and options as a gift to any one obstacle you face so do not hesitate to break your silence and contact us.

Job Hunting? Who deserves you?

Posted by: Shellee Hale | Comments (0)

Looking for work make a list of who deserves you? Now that you have a list learn everything you can about the company, their employees and their mission and make sure you still believe they would make a mistake not hiring you. Once you have determined they do deserve you it is time to go after what you want.

Start with your family, friends and contact list including recruiters to see who may have a connection within the corporation your seeking employment and start campaigning. Once you have exhausted those efforts it doesn’t hurt to start cold calling. Make sure that your name is on the short list and in front of them at decision time. Don’t ease up on your efforts even if you have to take something else short-term to meet your immediate needs.

Be persistent without being a nuisance. This is best done by strategizing ahead of time. Develop a plan, talk it over with your mentor, coach or recruiter and stick with it until you have proven that your target companies deserve you and you will make a positive difference to their bottom line. Build a business plan for this dream job and even a job description if it doesn’t exist, don’t give away your entire hand but intrigue them enough to call you in to talk more about the ideas you sent over.

I often say that one of the most important persons in a company is the one answering the phone. In recent years the automated phone answering has driven people nuts. In fact there are websites that give phone numbers and extensions to help you get to a real person. The practicality of this may have been necessary but the impersonalness of it has been irritating. Getting a real person on the phone when you call a company, one who is friendly and helpful and knows exactly where to direct the call and is able to answer your questions is a missing element that has added to the disconnect in this digital society. We need to start connecting again.

So, when your answering your own phone answer it well and professionally at all times. If someone is irritating you with a solicitation say thank you, but no thank you – it just might be a bait to see how you act on the phone.

This is a numbers game so make sure you have some options. The more options you have (that you can manage) the better your chances. What is your conversion rate on interviews? Most my clients have a 100% conversion rate. If they land an interview they get hired. What is it that gives them the edge over others? Preparation, practice and confidence. They know before they go into the interview that the company they want to work for deserves them and they can easily convey that message because of the preparation work they have done. These well prepared clients captivate when they get in front of the goal and their confidence and homework empowers and imresses their audience and they score.

Now make a list, write the detailed description of your dream job and know you will land it!
